idw award for the TUM Press Office

Best scientific press release of the year

The press office of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has received the award for the best research press release of the year 2024. A jury of experts from Informationsdienst Wissenschaft (idw) awarded the prize to TUM's communication on a new ultrasound method for bridge testing. The author of the text, press officer Moritz Müller, accepted the award at a ceremony at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

idw jury member Tim Schröder praised: "The press office team succeeded in explaining the technical details in an outstanding way and with clear, catchy language. The importance of the method for the entire construction industry and society is also clearly highlighted. The jury also rated the project website's highly professional video material as exemplary." A total of 96 press offices submitted entries to the competition.

TUM Vice President for Global Communication and Public Engagement, Prof. Jeanne Rubner, said: "Science communication is essential to promote trust and understanding of research. Professional communication is, therefore, central to TUM. I am delighted to receive this award for our press office." The prize is endowed with 3000 euros by idw and is explicitly used for science communication.

The communicated project of the research group CoDA (Concrete Damage Assessment by Coda Waves) deals with new methods for the safety testing of reinforced concrete - a central contribution to the longevity of bridges and buildings. Sensors and computer-aided calculation models are used for this purpose. In addition to TUM, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), and Bochum University of Applied Sciences (BO) are also involved in the project. Head of the the CoDA project is Christoph Gehlen, Professor of Materials and Materials Testing in Civil Engineering at TUM. CoDA is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
