Housing during your studies: Guidance and support

Studying in Munich opens up many new opportunities — and usually comes with one big question right at the start: Where will I live? Because housing here is limited and in high demand, you won’t have to figure it out on your own. We provide tips, information, and apartment listings, and we’re also available for individual advising if you need it. This helps you get off to a smooth start and find a new place to live more quickly.

It’s important to know that TUM does not operate its own residence halls. That’s why you should begin your housing search as early as possible – especially if you’re searching from abroad, as it can take more time. For temporary stays, hostels, youth hostels, or guest houses can be good options.

Protect yourself from fraudulent housing offers

Unfortunately, there are also fraudulent listings on the private housing market. By keeping the following points in mind, you can avoid most risks:

  • Don’t transfer any deposit or rent before you have seen the apartment in person and signed the rental contract.
  • Don’t share copies of your ID documents before you have verified the offer — this helps protect you from identity theft.
  • Be cautious if an offer seems unusually cheap or if someone tries to pressure you into making a quick decision.

You can find more guidance on our information page about the private housing market.
