New Science Center founded at TUM

Preventive health for children and adolescents

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has founded a new Science Center in order to improve the health of children and adolescents. The "Center for Health Promotion and Prevention in Childhood and Adolescence" (CHAMPION) will drive interdisciplinary research in the field of childhood health, with a particular focus on prevention.

The Center was founded during the "Interdisciplinary Summit Future of Health - Child Health and Wellbeing" at the TUM Department of Sport and Health Sciences. After a two-year qualification phase it will be further developed into an official WHO Collaborating Center.

On the occasion of the Center's opening, Bavarian State Minister of Health and Care Klaus Holetschek said: “The consequences of the Corona pandemic are particularly stressful for children and young people. How we can improve the health and well-being of young people has been a central concern of the Free State of Bavaria and a focus of the Bavarian Prevention Plan not only since the pandemic. We are funding a large number of projects in this area. I am therefore very pleased that TUM is standing by our side and making a valuable contribution to the health of our children by founding the CHAMPION center.”

Prof. Renate Oberhoffer-Fritz, dean of the TUM Department of Sport and Health Sciences, says: "Our society suffers from many widespread illnesses which could for the most part be prevented with healthier behavior. It's best to begin as early as childhood: Obesity and the frequently resulting cardio-vascular diseases and type II diabetes are not inevitable fates. Accordingly, our new Center for child and adolescent health focuses on prevention."
