Global warming leads to decline in humus

Climate change threatens mountain meadows

Mountain meadows are unique ecosystems. A research team led by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has now discovered that climate change reduces the humus content as well as the nitrogen stores in the grassland soils of the Alps and disturbs the soil structure. Organic fertilization, for example with liquid manure, can compensate this loss of soil organic matter to some extent.

Combining robotics and ChatGPT

TUM professor uses ChatGPT for choreographies with flying robots

Prof. Angela Schoellig from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) uses ChatGPT to develop choreographies for swarms of drones to perform along to music. An additional safety filter prevents mid-air collisions. The researchers' results demonstrate for the first time that large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT can be used in robotics.

TUM Autonomous Motorsports wins spectacular race in Abu Dhabi

Victory for TUM AI racers on Formula 1 track

The TUM vehicle controlled by artificial intelligence has achieved first place in an international race on the Formula 1 track in Abu Dhabi. Without a human driver or remote control, using only the superior autonomous software, the fully automated vehicle was able to prevail against seven other international teams with identical racing cars. It independently searched for the limits, mastered spectacular overtaking maneuvers and speeds of up to 250 km/h on the winding track.

Study with infants shows a surprising "internal clock" of intestinal bacteria

The formula of baby food has an effect on intestinal flora

The formulation of infant formula has an effect on the intestinal flora of babies. This was discovered by a team led by Prof. Dirk Haller from the Department of Nutrition and Immunology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in a study involving 210 children. According to the study, baby food enriched with galacto-oligosaccharides ensures a higher concentration of desired bifidobacteria in the intestine than substitute food enriched directly with bifidobacteria.

Surprising result of an elaborate genome analysis of the plant world

Pumpkins and roses are closely related

An international team of researchers, with the participation of TUM, has produced the most comprehensive genome analysis of the plant world to date. The aim was to determine the relationships of almost 10,000 flowering plants. The surprising result of the group led by Prof. Hanno Schaefer from the Chair of Plant Biodiversity at the Technical University of Munich (TUM): Pumpkins and roses are closely related.

Newly discovered mechanism could significantly improve cancer immunotherapies

Tumor cells evade the immune system early on

Tumors actively prevent the formation of immune responses by so-called cytotoxic T cells, which are essential in combating cancer. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) Hospital have now uncovered for the first time how this exactly happens. The study in the journal "Nature" provides rationales for new cancer immunotherapies and could make existing treatments more effective. A second paper in "Nature" confirms the findings.

Investigating the porosity of sedimentary rock with neutrons

Whether sedimentary rocks store fossil hydrocarbons or act as impermeable layers to prevent the rise of oil, natural gas or stored carbon dioxide - all depends on their porosity. The size, shape, organization, and connectivity of the pore spaces are decisive. At the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Research Neutron Source (FRM II) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the networks of micropores were characterized using small and very small angle neutron scattering.

New Siemens Technology Center at TUM Campus Garching

Siemens opens its largest cooperation center worldwide at TUM

At the new Siemens Technology Center (STC) on the TUM Campus Garching, 150 TUM staff and researchers will work with more than 450 Siemens specialists on new solutions related to digital twins, the industrial internet of things, robotics and automation. Bavarian Minister President Dr. Markus Söder, TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann, the CTO of Siemens Peter Körte and State Minister for Science and Arts Markus Blume were on hand to open the new research facility.

Genetic mechanisms uncovered

Boron deficiency: oilseed rape reacts as with infection and pest infestation

Boron deficiency has a devastating effect on oilseed rape and related plants. However, little is known about the underlying genetic mechanisms. A study shows that the response to persistent or short-term acute boron deficiency is similar to that to pests and infections. The results lay the foundation for breeding plants that can better cope with boron deficiency and for avoiding related yield losses.

Cutting-edge research on 6G at TUM

With the rollout of the 5G network still ongoing in Germany, researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are already conducting fundamental research for the next mobile communications generation. In the 6G Future Lab Bavaria, the team is developing and testing fundamental mechanisms to make communications more efficient, resilient and secure for all segments of society. On Friday the researchers presented a status report following the first three years of the project to Bavarian minister of economic affairs Hubert Aiwanger.
