QS Ranking: outstanding scores in engineering and natural sciences
TUM among the top 25 worldwide in several subjects
TUM placed 22nd in Engineering & Technology and 24th in Natural Sciences. This made it the best German university in both of these broad subject areas.
For this ranking, which is among the most influential in the world, the British recruitment company QS asks scientists and companies to rate the best universities. It also collects data on the frequency of citations of published research. The weightings of the various indicators take into account the diverse cultures across disciplines.
Along with the broad subject areas, QS also examines individual subjects. With improved results over the previous year in almost every area, TUM now counts among the 50 best universities in 10 subjects:
Subject | Global rank | Rank in Germany |
Physics & Astronomy | 16 | 1 |
Electrical Engineering | 20 | 1 |
Architecture | 25 | 1 |
Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering | 25 | 2 |
Agriculture & Forestry | 26 | 3 |
Chemistry | 27 | 1 |
Computer Science & Information Systems | 34 | 1 |
Materials Science | 39 | 2 |
Mathematics | 45 | 1 |
Chemical Engineering | 50 | 3 |
The issue of the “QS World University Ranking” with overall ratings for universities was released in mid-2018. TUM ranked 61st, and was thus the best German university for the fourth consecutive year.
