English Writing in Garching:

ECTS credits in the "Thesis Writers' Workshop"

Bachelor's theses, articles for scientific journals, resumes and job applications: Students, doctoral students and TUM-employees can further their English writing skills at the English Writing Center in Garching, which is located behind the cafeteria in the building of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

The English Writing Center started off at the Language Center (main campus) in 2012 and has since improved and expanded its offers. In Garching, Rose Jacobs is in charge of the Center. She worked as a journalist for the Financial Times in New York and London for 13 years.

The consultants and "Writing Fellows" come from various fields of profession – and many have already been working at the Language Centre for quite a while. All of them either have English as their native language or speak the language on the same level as native speakers.

"Writing Fellows" for each faculty

The center is planning to recruit more "Writing Fellows" – undergraduate and graduate students who represent their faculties. The goal is that every faculty will have its own Writing Fellow to ask for advice.

ECTS credits in the "Thesis Writers' Workshop"

In spring 2014, coordinator Jeremiah Hendren started the "Thesis Writers' Workshop" which combines the experience at the English Writing Center with a lecture course. The offer, which is worth two credit points, is aimed at students who are writing a Bachelor's or a Master's thesis and at doctoral students.

There are six group sessions in which you learn to write vivid and accurate scientific texts in English – plus ten individual sessions at the Writing Center.
