Assistance for students impacted by the earthquake disaster

Financial support and postponed exams

In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria the Technical University of Munich (TUM) Board of Management has announced a number of various relief measures. Thus an emergency relief scholarship will be created and made available to students for whom the impact of the disaster has meant existential material hardship. In addition, due to the significant associated psychological distress, it will be possible to postpone examinations without bureaucratic complications.

TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann has directed the examination boards to make it possible for students who can plausibly demonstrate that they or their family members have been impacted by or are suffering psychological difficulties due to the earthquake to postpone pending examinations. This expressly also applies after the originally planned deadlines have passed. On request it is also possible to retroactively nullify the results of completed tests taken after February 6, 2023, as long as the test results have not yet been communicated.

Requests for postponement or cancellation of deadlines in the context of the academic progress check as well as requests extending the preparation times for Bachelor's and Master's theses will also be approved without bureaucratic complications, under the circumstances described above. The otherwise mandatory submission of physician's certificates ("ärztliches Attest") in connection with psychological difficulties or proof of the specific impact suffered by the student will not be required.

Those affected by the earthquake disaster who would like to take a semester off may apply for a leave of absence for summer semester 2023. The request will be granted by the TUM Center for Study and Teaching – Admissions and Enrollment department without the need for further proof, solely on the basis of the presentation of the situation.

Financial aid for impacted TUM students

A generous donation from the business sector makes it possible for TUM to offer an emergency relief scholarship to impacted students. More current details are available at: www.tum.de/earthquake-support.

In addition, the existing TUM grant program for international students will also be made available to those impacted by the disaster. Requests for the program can be submitted from April 17 - 30, 2023, with payments planned for May 2023. More detailed information is available here.
