Course offered for digital political communication

Understanding and applying Data Science in social media

No one can succeed in political communication without a fundamental understanding of data analysis. A new certificate course at the TUM Institute for LifeLong Learning will open up the world of data collected via social media accessible to those interested, even without special skills in IT or statistics.

The program provides a basic understanding of how data are generated in social media and how the data can be made usable for digital political communication. Topics include the success of campaigns like #MeToo and #BlackLivesmatter, the enhancement of election campaigns using micro-targeting as well as the impact of incorrect information and fake news.

Prof. Yannis Theocharis and Dr. Jan Zilinsky of the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology and the Munich Data Science Institute are experts on political behavior who focus on digital media. They will provide course participants with an introduction to this dimension of digital communication.
