New issue of Technologist Magazine out now
Brain Drain - How Europe is fighting back
Research from Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Technologist No. 12
Cover story „Brain Drain“
- Where have all the start-ups gone? Prof. Ann-Kristin Achleitner of our Chair of Entrepreneurial Finance stresses the need to better leverage the transfer of technology – in order to create start-ups that stay in Europe.
- Follow-up on open science and open data. Prof. Simon Hegelich explains what makes building a European data economy so difficult. And learn more about OpenGridMap – an app that collects photos and locations of electrical infrastructure around the world. OpenGridMap is an initiative of our Chair of Application and Middelware Systems, held by Hans-Arno Jacobsen.
The science of listening
- A new frontier for artificial intelligence. Using algorithms to process sound is a booming field. Promising innovations include replicating a person’s voice on different devices: „There’s real demand“, says Prof. Matthias Althoff, researcher in the field of Cyber-Physical Systems.
- The architecture of sound. Prof. Gerhard Müller of our Chair of Structural Mechanics comments on the mission of acousticians and architects.
- Avoiding the sound of silence. Prof. Werner Hemmert and Prof. Bernhard Seeber have been developing new technologies that can slow the process of hearing loss: for instance a new algorithm that converts incoming sound into electrical signals sent to the brain. It may help people wearing cochlear implants to work out the direction of specific sounds when surrounded by lots of noise.
Start-ups
- Cevotec developed a new method for making carbon parts.
- Evalu created an app to personalize jogging routes.
- Orcan Energy invented a solution that turns waste heat into electricity.
