A record 13,000 new students enrolled this winter semester

TUM enrollment tops 40,000 for the first time

Enrollment at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has reached the 40,000 mark for the first time ever. That makes TUM the second-largest university in Bavaria, according to initial figures. This winter semester saw more than 13,000 new enrollments, breaking yet another record. 40 percent of the new Master's degree students are from abroad.

Monday will mark the beginning of the first semester for approximately 6,900 students in basic curricula (primarily Bachelor's programs) at TUM, more than any before. A total of approximately 40,000 students are now enrolled at TUM, an all-time high. The number of enrolled students doubled within a period of only 15 years; 9,000 new students arrived in the last five years alone. According to provisional data from the Bavarian State Office of Statistics, this means TUM has overtaken the FAU (Friedrich-Alexander-Unversität Erlangen-Nürnberg) as Bavaria's second-largest university.

At the same time, international attendance is increasing: Approximately 4,000 foreign first-semester students have enrolled in Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, 600 more than last year. 40 percent of all freshmen in Master's degree programs are from various countries around the world. The total share of foreign students is now 24 percent. One special factor this year: Participants in the auditor program for refugees have been approved for admission to regular degree programs.

Yesterday TUM was honored with the "Best Performance Prize" as Germany's most internationalized university in the natural sciences, engineering, informatics and mathematics, also known as MINT subjects in Germany. The prize is part of the support program "MINTernational", run by the Stifterverband (the business community’s innovation agency for German science), the Daimler Fund and the Daimler and Benz Foundation.

“New construction at the Garching campus to be completed as soon as possible”

This development was cause for TUM President Wolfgang A. Herrmann to point to the critical space situation at the three TUM locations Munich, Garching and Freising-Weihenstephan. The pending new construction for the TUM Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering on the Garching campus will have to be completed as quickly as possible, he said; other departments in central Munich urgently need the building space that will be vacated by the move.

Freshman reception kicks off the academic year

This coming Monday, October 17 at 5:00 pm, the TUM Board of Management will welcome the new students at the freshman reception on the grass next to the student cafeteria on Arcisstraße.
