New Shanghai Ranking published – TUM Chemistry in the top 15 worldwide

TUM again in Germany’s top 3

Technical University of Munich moved up two positions to 51st place in this year’s “Academic Ranking of World Universities” (“Shanghai Ranking”), thereby making it one of the three best German universities. In the individual subject rankings, TUM came in 14th in the academic ranking of world universities in Chemistry and 28th in Computer Science. This makes TUM the best university in Germany for these subjects and ahead of the University of Oxford internationally. The renowned rankings compiled by Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University assess the research performances of universities. They particularly emphasize the value of work published in important academic publications like Nature and Science, the citation rates of academics, as well as the number of scientists and alumni with Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals – one of the top awards in mathematics. The rankings assessed over 1,200 international universities. In addition to the overall rankings, individual subjects and subject fields are also assessed.

The three best German universities are practically neck and neck in the rankings: Heidelberg University placed 46th, TUM 51st and the University of Munich 52nd. Other German technical universities only managed rankings between 201st and 300th place. Among European technical universities, TUM came in third after the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and Imperial College London.

In Computer Sciences, TUM ranked among the world’s top 30 universities, and even placed 14th in Chemistry. Both subjects improved by two places compared to the previous year and are now even ahead of the University of Oxford. In the category Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences, TUM was the only German university to make it into the top 75 (rankings 51-75). TUM also came out on top in the national comparison of Life and Agricultural Sciences (rankings 51-75).
