Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize
The Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize honors achievements which result from collaboration between science and industry. The prize is awarded to scientists from publicly funded institutions whose work has been a driving force for innovative applications.
The prize commemorates the German physicist and manager Karl Heinz Beckurts (1930-1986). It has been awarded by the Karl Heinz Beckurts Foundation on an annual basis since 1989 and carries a monetary award of €30,000.
The following members of the TUM have been awarded the Beckurts Prize:
Full Professor for Biological Imaging (Department of Medicine)
Prof. Vasilis Ntziachristos received the 2021 Karl Heinz Beckurts Award for his outstanding achievements and pioneering work in the field of biomedical imaging, in particular Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT) technology.
Full Professor of Biological Chemistry (TUM School of Life Sciences)
Prof. Dr. Arne Skerra received the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize in 2005 “for his work in the field of molecular biotechnology”.
Full Professor of Semiconductor Technology (TUM Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Markus-Christian Amann received the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize together with Dr. Markus Ortseifer (Technical Director of Vertilas GmbH in Garching) in 2004 “for their groundbreaking work in the field of optical sensor technology and data transmission and for implementing these in industry”.
Professor Emeritus of Flight Propulsion (TUM Department of Mechanical Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Günter Kappler received the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize in 2000 “for the comprehensive transfer of the scientific and technical groundwork he carried out as head of the Chair of Flight Propulsion of the Technical University of Munich for industrial implementation, leading to the successful development of a family of aircraft engines”.
Honorary Professor of the Department of Informatics
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerd Hirzinger received the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize in 1996.
Full Professor of Applied Mathematics (Department of Mathematics) since 1992
Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Hoffmann received the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize together with Prof. Dr. Martin Gröthschel in 1990.
