Recognition for TUM's structural reform and his appreciative management style
TUM President Hofmann honored as "University Manager of the Year"
Thomas F. Hofmann took over as President of TUM in 2019 - his immediate predecessor Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann had previously been in office for 24 years. The CHE cited the following reasons for Thomas F. Hofmann's award: "It is generally not easy not only to maintain a very high standard at a university after a change of leadership, but also to significantly develop it further and reinterpret many things - especially not at TUM. But he has managed it." The jury also emphasized Thomas F. Hofmann's commitment to strategic cooperation with selected leading institutions in Germany and especially internationally.
“Recognition for our committed TUM family”
Thomas F. Hofmann thanked the jury for the recognition: "I gratefully accept the award on behalf of our committed TUM family. I see this award as recognition of the many changes I have made together with students, staff and colleagues to make TUM even more effective in meeting the challenges of the future. This is not so much an award for my own contribution, but rather for the agility and performance of our university community as a whole. I would like to thank the many people in research, teaching, innovation and administration for their personal commitment, resilience, flexibility and pragmatism."
Bavaria's Science Minister Markus Blume said: "A university of excellence with an excellent President: At the top of the best university in the European Union is Germany's University Manager of the Year! Congratulations to Prof. Dr. Thomas F. Hofmann on this more than well-deserved award. He steers our Bavarian university flagship from one success to the next in a visionary and reliable manner! TUM is a hotbed of innovation with a unique spirit: among the best in the world, it develops answers to the big questions of our time - also thanks to the irrepressible drive of its President!"
After studying food chemistry at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Thomas F. Hofmann completed his doctorate at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and habilitated there. In 2002, he accepted a professorship at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. In 2007, he returned to TUM as Professor of Food Chemistry and Molecular Sensory Science. From 2009 to 2019, as Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation, he implemented the TUM Faculty Tenure Track System and significantly expanded TUM's entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Since 2019, as President, he has been driving the structural reorganization of TUM towards a matrix structure of schools and integrative research institutes. With the TUM Venture Labs, he has established a network of highways for the transfer of new findings and developments into marketable innovations. And with the ONE MUNICH strategy, he wants to make Munich the number one science and innovation metropolis in Europe.
