Fourth TUM DeSal Challenge launched

Competition: design ideas for seawater desalination plants invited

The resource-sparing provision of drinking water for the world’s growing population is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. The Department of Thermodynamics at the Technische Universität München (TUM) is looking at ways to boost the efficiency of seawater desalination plants. To this end, students and faculty of the department are launching the fourth TUM DeSal Challenge.

The international competition is aimed at pupils and students, who have been invited to submit a concept for a compact seawater desalination plant. The requirements are that the plant must run without fossil fuel and must be inexpensive and simple to operate.

The deadline for submitting entries is December 1, 2015. The three winners of the competition will receive a total of 3,000 euros.

The TUM DeSal Challenge is sponsored by the KSB Foundation, Solarenergieförderverein Bayern, Deutsche MeerwasserEntsalzung, Krones AG and Omya. Details on the competition can be found at www.desalchallenge.com
