The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of the world's top 25 universities in computer sciences, natural sciences and engineering. This is the result of the latest subject rankings published by the British magazine Times Higher Education (THE).

TUM achieves research successes through particularly strong interdisciplinary work, for example at the Munich Institute of Biomedical Engineering.

In the THE World University Rankings by Subject, TUM achieved the following positions:

  • Computer Science: 14
    (1st in Germany)
  • Physical Sciences: 19
    (1st in Germany)
includes chemistry, physics, mathematics, and environmental sciences, among others
  • Engineering: 22
    (1st in Germany)
  • Business and Economics: 31
    (1st in Germany)
  • Life Sciences: 34
    (1st in Germany)
  • Education Studies: 42
    (1st in Germany)
  • Medicine and Health: 53
    (4th in Germany)

The THE rankings take various factors into account: on the one hand, academics worldwide are asked about the reputation of universities in research and teaching. On the other hand, data such as the number of publications per researcher, citations per publication, the ratio of teaching staff to students, third-party funding raised from industry, the number of patents and the degree of internationalization are evaluated. These indicators are weighted according to the prevailing culture in the various subject areas. In the recently published main edition of the THE Rankings, TUM is ranked 26th.

TUM also achieved excellent positions in other internationally renowned subject rankings. In the Shanghai Rankings, which examine more narrowly defined subjects, TUM is among the top 10 in remote sensing, agricultural sciences and biotechnology and among the top 50 in five other subjects. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, TUM is ranked 19th in engineering and 23rd in natural sciences. It also belongs to the top 25 universities worldwide for seven individual subjects.
