TUM Klinikum rechts der Isar and German Heart Centre Munich at TUM both work in research and in providing patients with care at an internationally excellent level. The institutions will continue to function independently in operative and economic terms, but will be united under a single entity: the TUM University Hospital. This creates a globally outstanding center for leading-edge medicine which can successfully counter economic challenges and can join with the other TUM disciplines to optimally integrate future technologies for the benefit of medicine.

Munich is being strengthened as a medical location even further in the form of the M1 – Munich Medicine Alliance, in which TUM, LMU, the clinics of the universities and Helmholtz Munich will work together. The partners intend to create joint infrastructures for conducting clinical studies, for platform technologies and for data integration. Translation projects are to accelerate the transition of new findings and technologies from the laboratory into practical application. The Bavarian Parliament has now authorized the launch of the M1 – Munich Medicine Alliance Foundation.

"More distinction, more strength, more leading-edge care"

Bavarian Minister of Science Markus Blume says: "We are entering a new era of leading-edge medicine in Bavaria. Today Munich university medicine already stands for absolute excellence. We are taking this to a new level with the founding of the TUM University Hospital. By uniting the two first-rate institutions TUM Klinikum rechts der Isar and German Heart Centre Munich under one roof, we are combining the best with the best! This will be a beacon for cardiac and vascular medicine unrivalled in all of Germany, a real medical heavyweight. Our objective: More exchange, more efficiency, more excellence – to the benefit of the patient! In addition, with M1 – Munich Medicine Alliance we are shaping a unique platform for the exchange of knowledge and research findings among TUM, LMU, the two university clinics and Helmholtz. We are establishing a joint center for clinical studies, creating a data integration center and are placing a focus on translation. One thing is clear: Working together closely means greatly benefitting from one another. More distinction, more strength, more leading-edge care for people – together, we are unbeatable!"

"By founding the TUM University Hospital we are creating a beacon with international distinction," says TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann. "The combination of the excellent expertise of the TUM Klinikum rechts der Isar and the German Heart Centre Munich and its convergence with TUM's technical-scientific profile will take our medical research and health care provision to an even higher level of performance. We are consolidating these elements with the strengths of our partners in the Munich Medicine Alliance to make Munich a worldwide-renowned location for medicine."

"In the future two renowned medical centers will follow a shared path in patient care, research and teaching as TUM University Hospital. We intend to jointly drive our excellent, patient-centered care and make medical progress by connecting leading-edge technologies with medicine in the future," says Dr. Martin Siess, Medical Director of the TUM University Hospital and Chairman of the Board, which will in the future consists of five persons. "As the TUM University Hospital we can erase the existing boundaries between the two institutions and intensify our many years of collaboration to the great benefit of our patients, staff and researchers."

Prof. Peter Ewert, Medical Director of the Heart Centre and member of the TUM University Hospital board says: "The German Heart Centre Munich and the TUM Klinikum rechts der Isar are famous for their excellent medical performance. The unique culture of the two clinics will be retained. However, this fusion will unleash synergies which will translate innovative treatment methods more quickly into clinical practice and will greatly improve patient care." He adds that as a part of the TUM University Hospital, the Heart Centre will benefit from improved financing for research and teaching. "We began 50 years ago as Germany's first single-organ clinic. Today the Heart Centre is a leading center for cardio-vascular medicine. Now it is continuing this success story as an important part of the TUM University Hospital."
