Helping to unite the sciences in Europe

TUM aims to join the CEU in Budapest

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is putting its weight behind an initiative proposed by group leader of the European Parliament’s European People’s Party, Manfred Weber (MEP) to support the development of a Central European University (CEU) in Budapest by contributing to its teaching and research program. Both universities will thus be holding talks on April 11 and 12, 2019 to outline the content and structural framework of TUM’s involvement in Budapest.

TUM plans to create three professorships that will enable the Bavarian School of Public Policy and TUM School of Governance to embed their hallmark technology focus within political science into the CEU’s portfolio. One of the prerequisites is a mutual understanding that the Hungarian government will give its assurance that the CEU in Budapest will be authorized to award US and European degrees and host joint doctoral programs to the highest international standards.

TUM President Professor Wolfgang A. Herrmann believes that the CEU concept sends a strong signal around the internationalization of academia in the Central European city of Budapest, also countering the unfortunate Brexit effect and similar, even more nationalistic tendencies. “Now is the time to express solidarity with the principles of freedom and unity through diversity in science and education,” explains the President. He thanked the Bavarian state government for their willingness to provide political impetus and material support for this goal.

TUM has been operating its own strategic location in Singapore since 2001 under the name TUM Asia Pte. Ltd. In 2010, the university also set up the TUM.CREATE research campus at the same location.
