Energy with a difference: about sport, metabolism and gummy bears

What actually does our metabolism do? And how many gummy bears do we consume during sport? Children aged 7 to 12 got the answer now at a very active lecture, which started the new semester of the Munich KinderUni at TUM's Olympic Park Campus. Its title: “Energy with a difference” with Prof. Karsten Köhler. Before the lecture, the young students were able to investigate the topic themselves: with a runnig experiment on the 400-meter track.

TUM Researchers Develop New Chemical Method for Improved Energy Storage

Significant Extension of Zinc Battery Lifespan

The transition to renewable energy requires efficient methods for storing large amounts of electricity. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed a new method that could extend the lifespan of aqueous zinc-ion batteries by several orders of magnitude. Instead of lasting just a few thousand cycles, they could now endure several hundred thousand charge and discharge cycles.

With a valuation of over 1 billion euros, the start-up EGYM is the latest unicorn launched at TUM. The company has achieved international success with digital fitness equipment that provides personalized training programs. TUM researchers and graduates have now established 21 unicorns in total.

Current research on the new 6G mobile communications standard

Nursing care robots, autonomous driving, digital twins: all of these high-tech applications will play an essential role for the new 6G mobile communications standard. The first commercial 6G networks are expected to be available as of 2030. In the 6G-life and 6G Future Lab Bavaria initiatives, researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and TU Dresden are already testing and developing the fundamental mechanisms of the sixth mobile communications generation. One goal is to establish a complete communications system with components supplied exclusively by German start-ups.
